Curator's Statement

Curated by Consuelo G. Glores, renowned Altarista and Culture Bearer born and raised in East Los Angeles. She’s created Day of the Dead altars at Gloria Molina Grand Park since 2012 and curated the altar installations there from 2022 – 2024, including designing and creating Community Ofrendas in 22-24.

“Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead is an important cultural celebration. It is unlike any other event in the calendar. This celebration allows us to remember the lives of the people we lost, whether it’s been days or decades. It allows us to tell the stories of who they were, teaching the generations that come after, the lessons of the ancestors.

This year, our ofrenda/altar artists reimagine and steward our vision towards a future within the overall theme of remembrance and honoring our dead with collective strength. Part of the future we strive for is finding peace, as the community altar offers.

With their ofrenda/altar, each artist is telling a story of who they’re honoring, who they’re remembering. You’ll find dedications to those who worked toward peace and education, infants and children, parents and grandparents, fallen warriors, elders who advocated liberation, and beloved pets.

It has been my honor to work with these artists as they create space to process grief, find the joy of life and carry on our tradition of remembering our loved ones through their beautiful work. Please take your time as you walk through the park, taking in the stories each artist offers. And, if the spirit moves you, place a memento, photograph, or note on the community ofrenda. All offerings are welcome.”
