Explore 19 unique altars created by professional artists and local organizations reflecting the diverse stories & cultures of Los Angeles.Community altar by leaving a framed photo, memento, or message in remembrance of someone special. Curated by renowned artist Consuelo G. Flores, this year’s theme is ‘Let Freedom Ring: Honoring Our Immigrant Ancestors.’

Curator's Statement

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.”

~ Excerpt of The New Colossus poem on the Statue of Liberty

With the freedoms born from the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights, the discouraged, oppressed, from every part of the world courageously made their way here seeking new lives and freedoms in a new land. This hope brought many families to this country. Mine was one.

I’ve never felt insecure here. Now, I carry my birth certificate with me because of ICE and the potential that I’ll be disappeared. No one knowing where I’ve been taken or what’s happened.

How can ICE effectively change so drastically overnight? Was it that easy? I wondered about my family, how did they – we – escape this miscarriage of justice. How can the important contributions immigrants made, be disregarded?

The altars you’ll visit, focus on legacies of our immigrant past, of transplants from other countries. Perhaps even your family experience is reflected. These are stories of tragedy, resilience, fortitude, love, and ultimately hope, heartfelt responses to intense challenges we face today.

The monarch butterflies represent migration, the hope of metamorphosis, of becoming American. Now, that American Dream is being tested by the original, European immigrants.

The legacies we honor here are reminders of where we come from and how much we can accomplish.

– Consuelo G. Flores, renowned Altarista and Culture Bearer born and raised in East Los Angeles.
